Lifetime Achievement Awards (LTAA)
Congratulations to Dr. Wai-Hoi Wong receiving 2025 CASNMMI Lifetime Achievement Award!!!
Dr. Wong, born in Hong Kong, has devoted his professional career to the field of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. He is one of the early generations of nuclear physicals professionals in United States, the well-known nuclear medicine expert.
1979: Ph D. from University of Wisconsin - Madison, Studied in Experimental Nuclear Physics focusing on Accelerator Engineering, Nuclear Reaction Synthesis Coincidence Detection and Gamma-Ray Time-of-Flight Instrumentation
1980: His first job was as an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Medical School in Houston in a new start-up group for developing the first clinically functional Time-Of-Flight PET camera.
1987: Became an Associate Professor at the University of Texas-Houston. Led the development of the earliest commercial PET systems. The earliest two customers were NIH and the MD Anderson Cancer Center.
1990: Was appointed as Professor and the Scientific Director of the PET Center in MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he established a premiere PET Instrumentation Development Lab, in designing and engineering lower-cost and ultrahigh resolution PET.
2005: His lab developed the world's first small animal PET-CT. This was a low-cost animal PET-CT achieving the world's highest PET resolution of 1 mm.
2013: His team developed China's first commercial clinical PET-CT achieving the highest clinical PET resolution of 1.5 mm, with the support of the Shanghai United Imaging Corporation. All his lab's technology/patents were subsequently licensed to the Shanghai United Imaging Corporation.
2017: After 40 years in PET development, Dr. Wong happily retired from the MD Anderson Cancer Center.
